The answer is usually a combination of all three — and once you understand the variables, getting lasting scent in your home becomes straightforward.
The Short Answer
A quality room spray — formulated at meaningful concentration and sprayed correctly — should deliver 3 to 8 hours of room presence. At Scent Room, that is the window we formulate and test against. Our sprays sit at 15% fragrance concentration, which is the lower end of Eau de Parfum territory, and significantly higher than most competitors operating at 2–5%.
What Affects How Long Room Spray Lasts
1. Fragrance Concentration
This is the foundation. A room spray at 3% concentration cannot perform like one at 15%. The fragrance load simply is not there to sustain presence once the initial burst of alcohol evaporates. 2. Where You Spray
Fabric is where fragrance lives. Curtains, cushions, rugs, throw blankets, upholstered furniture — these surfaces absorb and retain fragrance in a way that turns a single spray into hours of ambient scent. Practically: spray the lower third of curtains, lightly mist cushions from about 30cm away, and run a pass over any rugs in the room.
3. Room Size and Ventilation
A small, enclosed bathroom will hold scent far longer than an open-plan living area. In a large open-plan space, you may need 4–6 sprays and should focus on fabrics near the centre. Ventilation — open windows, ceiling fans, ducted air conditioning — will pull fragrance molecules out faster.
4. The Scent Family
Citrus and fresh notes evaporate fastest. Our Fresh & Clean room sprays (like Lemongrass & Persian Lime) sit at the shorter end of the longevity window — designed to cut through and refresh.

How to Make Room Spray Last Longer: Practical Tips
Spray Fabric, Not Just Air
Curtains, cushions, and rugs are your primary targets. Bed linen is excellent for bedroom use. The back of a wardrobe door, closed after spraying, will hold scent for days.
Close the Room After Spraying
After spraying, close doors and windows for 10–15 minutes. This allows the fragrance to settle into surfaces rather than being carried straight out.
Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat Sources
UV light and heat accelerate fragrance evaporation. All Scent Room bottles are made from UV-protective glass to preserve formula integrity in storage.
Layer, Do Not Reset
Rather than waiting until the scent has fully faded, top up while some presence remains. One or two sprays as a top-up will refresh the room without over-saturating it.
